Jackie is an artist who enjoys creating photographs that show her sensitivity to light and her love of nature. She is greatly influenced by the Baroque artist Caravaggio and his use of chiaroscuro (light eminating from extreme darkness) as well as contemporary artists such as Cindy Sherman, Robert Mapplethorpe and Diane Arbus. Her main bodies of work focus on the fragility of nature and humans, the eerieness of mannequins, and the wonderful light that happens in night time settings. Jackie strives to bring beauty to the mundane whether it be a bunch of artichokes or a pair of drinking glasses. Her work displays her thoughtful approach to lighting, as well as a keen understanding of color and space. This can also be seen in her printmaking.
Jackie developed her love of silkscreening at an art institute in Florence, Italy during the summer of 2005. When she returned to the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she was attending college, she continued her silkscreening work and began studying letterpress and book arts. While her photographic work may be considered more serious, she takes pleasure in creating stationery, limited edition books, and prints that are both delicate and lighthearted. Her stationery is inspired by subjects from nature and begin as drawings which are then translated onto a silkscreen or a letterpress block. Though Jackie enjoys making stationery for her personal collection, she has been commissioned to make custom business cards and stationery for various occasions.
Jackie focuses most of her energy on her photography and printmaking but also is experienced in painting, illustration, and graphic design. If you would like to see more of her work she can be reached at jackie@jackietopol.com.
